Red Tails Flies High

Hope you got a chance to see “Red Tails” this weekend. What an inspirational, action packed ride! The aerial fighting scenes are incredible. The good news is that lots of folks went on opening weekend. As Box Office Mojo reports, “Red Tails cruised in to second place with a very respectable $18.8 million”, which is more than several other comparable fighter pilot movies have earned in their first weekend. The movie received an “A” CinemaScore, which improved to a fantastic “A+” score for those below 18 and above 50. Red Tails marks distributor 20th Century Fox’s best opening for a non-franchise title since last April’s “Rio”.

This is a good old-fashioned war movie, wonderfully corny and patriotic, enhanced by modern special effects. For those of you who haven’t seen it yet, go as soon as you can! If you enjoyed it, go see it again!! Take your parents as well as your children, especially your sons.

The history of the Tuskegee Airmen is a worthy and inspiring history. However, I took my son to see the film yesterday and we were both undone by the individual scenes of violence. Especially graphic was the extended death scene toward the end of the film. As a family we have made commitments to non-violence (following Dr. King) and have been actively anti-war. Therefore, we haven’t exposed our son to violent video games, song lyrics, TV shows or movies. It made for an uncomfortable 2 hours with my 10-year old at the theatre. It also made me long for the day when Black men will more often be considered heroic and valiant for many and broader reasons–beyond the ways that they are purveyors of legal violence (i.e., soldiers, football players, boxers, etc.), or illegal violence (gang members, gangster rappers, thugs and cinematic vigilantes, etc). Much respect to the Tuskeegee Airman and let us now broaden our spectrum of images.
